Pssst…The Creative Volcano Within Needs Silence and Space

Artful leaders hold the space at the edge of creative tension - and never feed the silence.

Are you a creative catalyst - or a dampener?

Can you hold silent space for your team, or the person in front of you - or do you rush to fill it?

To rescue them with your own idea. To please.

To prove you know.

Artful leaders hold space beyond the edge of creative tension, beyond the itch of an unfinished thought. This is where self-reflection bubbles up - insight still molten, not yet crystallised into words. An idea, still becoming.

In that gap, something sacred happens: an 'aha' moment is born, or collective intelligence erupts.

From the outside, it looks like discomfort - maybe suffering. In a group solving problems together, it can feel excruciating for everyone.

Heresy: don't feed the silence. Guard it like a midwife, not a rescuer. Give people room to become.

Try this: next time silence lands, notice your comfort threshold - how many seconds before you jump in? Extend it. Double it. Then double it again.

Ask: am I filling this to look good - or to let someone dig deeper?

Contemplative pauses aren't a soft skill. They're a pivotal tool for the leaders of tomorrow.

Interesting fact: "bearable silence" in the West sits at 2–4 seconds. In parts of Asia, 8–12.

The less awkward silence feels to you, the more you are evolving as a leader.

Ask the question. Give them the stage. Say nothing. Let them fill it.

If you’re ready to evolve, I’m here to listen.
